"It’s no secret that at the core of a superior off-road vehicle lies a body-on-frame construction. 4Runner is one of the last SUVs to still be built this way, keeping true to a heritage that has proven that body-on-frame is the answer to extreme ruggedness."
While the Toyota 4Runner first appeared when the SUV was still seen as strictly a vehicle best suited for the wild, the Hyundai Santa Fe debuted in an automatic world about to be ruled by said body style. Both have evolved in size and amenities over the past two decades to accommodate an increasingly sophisticated consumer base. The 2018 model year finds both vehicles with no major changes, as the 4Runner continues with its fifth generation of production while the Santa Fe closes out its third. Although the 4Runner and the Santa Fe are decent midsize SUVs to own, the former is a better pick. Here’s why:
The exterior of the 2018 Toyota 4Runner shows the vehicle’s complete preparedness for all-weather and all-terrain driving. Sporting a bulky and elongated profile, the SUV has fog lights for penetrating illumination during nighttime driving, as well as skid plates on the engine, front suspension, and fuel tank to protect them from being damaged by objects on the driving surface. (On four-wheel-drive models, a skid plate is also placed over the transfer case.) With its sleek profile and absence of skid plates—and fog lights being optional—the 2018 Hyundai Santa Fe does not look and function as a vehicle that would survive the harshest of road and weather conditions.
In addition to the aforementioned exterior features, the 2018 Toyota SUV offers the choice of a four-wheel-drive for being able to drive on virtually any type of surface, which includes sand, mud, snow, and grass. Plus, it is powered by a massive 4.0-liter V6. By comparison, the 2018 Santa Fe provides the choice of an all-wheel drivetrain, which is sufficient for conquering slippery surfaces, but not much else. Its workhorse is a smaller, 3.3-liter V6 engine.
Both the 2018 Toyota 4Runner and the 2018 Hyundai Santa Fe are typically two-row vehicles, with the option of adding a third row to seat up to seven people. So, interior space is not an issue with either SUV. However, with a maximum cargo space of 89.7 cubic feet when you fold down all the seats behind the front seating—that is, if you go with the base-level SR5 trim—you will get more luggage room on the 4Runner. On the Santa Fe, you can only maximize cargo space to 80 cubic feet.
In addition to the usual standard safety features—multiple airbags, a rearview camera, electronic vehicle stability control, four-wheel anti-lock disc brakes with electronic brake-force distribution and brake assist, and traction control—the 2018 4Runner is packaged with Smart Stop Technology®. This means that the vehicle can come to a complete stop if there is unwanted acceleration. This feature is not available at all on the 2018 Hyundai Santa Fe.
On the 2018 Toyota 4Runner, you will enjoy the Entune™ multimedia system, which includes eight speakers, Bluetooth® wireless technology for hands-free phone operation and audio streaming, a three-month SiriusXM® satellite radio trial subscription, HD Radio™, and Siri® Eyes Free for voice commands. The 2018 Hyundai Santa Fe has six speakers instead of eight, and it does not include Siri® Eyes Free in its list of standard infotainment components.
The Toyota difference.
