"It’s no secret that at the core of a superior off-road vehicle lies a body-on-frame construction. 4Runner is one of the last SUVs to still be built this way, keeping true to a heritage that has proven that body-on-frame is the answer to extreme ruggedness."
It's easy to see that utility has become extremely important when even German car manufacturers get into the SUV market. The small European country has never been known for producing trucks, but the Volkswagen Atlas is a competent competitor for the extremely popular Toyota 4Runner. The Toyota SUV remains one of the best-rounded options for utility and performance, and this comparison is intended to determine which SUV is better for life in.
The 4runner is still one of the most capable off road SUVs and it offers several packages to take advantage of this. The TRD Off-Road offers 17" rims and tires that are 0.5" wider. The all-terrain tires are complimented by a skid plate and a higher ground clearance. The Limited trim offers 20" tires, a sunroof and optional deploying running boards
The New Volkswagen Atlas is a "cute" vehicle that will appeal to younger drivers. Unfortunately, the cute exterior limits the Atlas's utility. The SEL trim offers LED tail lights and black 20" rims. This option would be more attractive if the rims were polished aluminum, but they still provide more ground clearance. The Toyota gets the edge in the exterior category because it offers features that provide more off-road capability.
The new 4runner features a standard 4.0-liter V6 engine that accelerates from 0-60 in 8.1 seconds. This vehicle is rugged and comparable to a pickup truck in terms of hauling and towing. The part-time four-wheel drive and crawl control are complemented by traction control and rear locking differential. Therefore, the new 4Runner can handle virtually any off-roading situation. The five-speed automatic transmission offers seamless shifting for easy handling around the city of...
The Volkswagen Atlas also offers adequate power and also accelerates to 60 MPH in 8.1 seconds. However, the Atlas is built upon a car Chassis. Therefore, it offers only moderate off-road ability. The vehicle does offer impressive steering and handling to whisk you around Valley Stream, NY. This is a nice mid-size crossover, but the 4Runner offers far more off-road prowess.
The interior of the new 4Runner can comfortably seat five adults. The seats are composed of vinyl with available heated front seats. The auto-dimming rear view mirror is also a nice on sunny days in Greenvale. The off-road controls are located overhead which makes them easy for the driver to access during trips to Bayside and Westbury.
The Atlas offers standard third row seating and 20.6 cubic feet of space behind the last row. With all the seats laying flat, there is 96.8 feet of cubic space for towing cargo around... The 6.5" interface is standard but there is an available 8" interface. The Atlas also features Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
The new 4Runner is one of the safest SUVs on the road with an overall 4 star safety rating. Vehicle stability control is standard on every trim as is traction control, brake assist and Smart Stop technology. Side impact beams are complemented by knee and side airbags.
The Atlas is also very safe when driving through Long Island, NY. It has a five star crash rating with the NTHSA. However, it isn't as stable in off-roading situations and it may leave you stranded in on rough terrain. This vehicle is also prone to tip over when it's driven on uneven terrain outside of Greenvale, New York.
The Toyota Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System features innovative stabilizer bars that can automatically adjust to provide improved traction. The Limited trim features an amazing 15-speaker audio system.
The Atlas features up to four USB ports depending upon the trim. It also features satellite radio and an impressive interface. The Atlas offers superior technology inside, but the 4Runner has better off-roading technology. Overall, the 4Runner is a much better SUV than the Atlas because it offers superior utility.
